Adding a Backup Location

A backup location is a location in the advanced integration project that is linked to some destination folder, and is used to store backup copies of Revit project files (RVT) in that linked destination folder. The backup location can be a folder on the local file system, in a ProjectWise datasource, or in the ProjectWise Share portal of a ProjectWise project. You can add as many backup locations to your project as you need, in case you need to back up your files to more than one location. Once a backup location exists in your project, you can use the eTransmit command in the ProjectWise browser to send RVT files to the destination folder specified in the backup location.

Create a Backup Location Linked to a Folder in a ProjectWise Datasource

  1. Right-click your project in the ProjectWise browser and select Create Location.

    The Create Location dialog opens.

  2. Set Role to Backup Location.
  3. Set Bind to to ProjectWise, then click the Browse button.

The Select the folder to link dialog opens.

  4. Select a work area or folder (where the backup files will be stored) and click OK.
Note: The Select the folder to link dialog opens to the current datasource, which is the datasource that your project is stored in. If needed, you can select a folder from another datasource by selecting another datasource from the Folders list and logging in when prompted. Whichever datasource you use, you can either select an existing work area or folder, or you can right-click in the dialog to create a new work area or folder.
  5. In the Create Location dialog, click OK.

The backup location is added to the project in the ProjectWise browser. You can now use the eTransmit command on individual RVT files in your Work in progress folder, to send the RVT file to the backup location. (see eTransmitting)

Create a Backup Location Linked to a Folder in ProjectWise Share

  1. Make sure this project is associated to a ProjectWise project. (see Associate a Project to a ProjectWise Project)
  2. Right-click your project in the ProjectWise browser and select Create Location.

    The Create Location dialog opens.

  3. Set Role to Backup Location.
  4. Set Bind to to Share, then click the Browse button.

The Select ProjectWise Share Folder dialog opens.

  5. Expand the top folder (the name of the ProjectWise project), then select a subfolder (where the backup files will be stored) and click OK.
Note: In the Select ProjectWise Share Folder dialog, you can either select an existing folder, or you can right-click in the dialog to create a new folder. The only folder you cannot select is the top folder (which is the root of the ProjectWise Share portal of this ProjectWise project).
  6. In the Create Location dialog, click OK.

The backup location is added to the project in the ProjectWise browser. You can now use the eTransmit command on individual RVT files in your Work in progress folder, to send the RVT file to the backup location. (see eTransmitting)

Create a Backup Location Linked to a Local or Network Folder

  1. Right-click your project in the ProjectWise browser and select Create Location.

    The Create Location dialog opens.

  2. Set Role to Backup Location.
  3. Set Bind to to File System, then click the Browse button.

The Browse For Folder dialog opens.

  4. Select a local or network folder (where the backup files will be stored) and click OK.
  5. In the Create Location dialog, click OK.

The backup location is added to the project in the ProjectWise browser. You can now use the eTransmit command on individual RVT files in your Work in progress folder, to send the RVT file to the backup location. (see eTransmitting)

Backup Location Settings

SettingDescription
Name Sets the display name for this location in the ProjectWise browser in Revit. The location name defaults to the name of the selected linked folder, but you can change the location name if needed.
Role Must be set to Backup Location for this type of location.
Bind to The Bind to menu shows which repository type is selected (ProjectWise, Share, or File System), and the Path field below it shows the path to the selected linked folder in that repository. For example:

ProjectWise datasource work area or folder path - pw:\\servername:datasourcename\Documents\Revit Backup Location

ProjectWise Share folder path - ProjectWise Share\Home\Revit Backup Location

Local or network folder path - C:\Revit Backup Location

Populate the location with bound content When on (default), a link to each document that currently exists in (or later gets added or eTransmitted to) the destination folder will be added under this location in the project.
